The Guardian has revamped its app to offer a cleaner design and more personalised experience for its users, and to integrate its user-generated content platform GuardianWitness for the first time.
Building on the success of its existing apps – – which have been downloaded by more than 1 million people – the new version is available across all android and iOS phones and tablets running Android 4 and iOS7.The app still showcases the Guardian’s editorial content, but now has enhanced interactivity by incorporating GuardianWitness, which allows readers to contribute comments, photos and videos.
It also offers users a more personalised experience as they are able to choose the type of articles they want featured on their homepage; create bespoke alerts to follow favourite journalists, stories and football teams; and select region-specific editorial.
Improved and personal alerts allow users to follow breaking news, live stories and football games as they happen.
The app is free to download, while a premium, ad-free version priced at £2.49 a month offers access to daily crosswords, content from the Guardian’s archive and special extracts from Guardian books.
Tanya Cordrey, chief digital officer of Guardian News & Media, said: “The launch of the new app is yet another landmark moment in our digital innovation journey, as we continue to evolve and improve the experience or readers across all platforms. We have involved readers at each stage of development and have created an app with great design at its heart, offering a personalised and sophisticated news experience to our increasingly global audience.
“Digital innovation, design and editorial excellence are core components of the Guardian. The new app will not only enhance readers’ experience of the Guardian through improving access to our award-winning content; it also harnesses technology to help our journalists tell their stories in the best ways possible.”
The app was created by a team of more than 20 developers, editorial staff and digital experts at the Guardian’s UX (User Experience) Studio.
